According to the latest statistics from the internet security company Internet Security Systems (ISS), the number of websites hosting illegal and extremist content has increased by nearly 50% compared to last year.
Out of a total of 16 million personal websites currently existing online, the number of dark and subversive websites has reached 188,000 (up from 132,000 in 2004).
At the data processing center of ISS located in Kassel, Germany, one thousand computers continuously scour the Internet, checking for new websites. Every day, images, graphics, and content from these sites are automatically analyzed and categorized without interruption.
There are 60 thematic categories listed, covering all kinds of information appearing on the web, from popular web applications like online shopping, music, sports, and finance, to less transparent content such as weapons, the distribution of spyware, or the promotion of extremist material.
Content posted on these sites, if inadvertently accessed by children, can lead to unpredictable and extremely harmful consequences. For instance, guides on how to create weapons and bombs, invitations to download provocative images, steamy video clips, worship of Satan, the spread of superstition, witchcraft, or discussions about cannibalistic practices can all be found.
Websites and forums that encourage members to commit suicide or self-harm are categorized as “Dark.” Articles promoting criminal activities such as murder, kidnapping, and vandalism are also increasing at an alarming rate.
ISS advises households and businesses to install robust content filtering programs to block access to harmful sites.
