Two research institutes focusing on the Internet from Harvard University and the University of Oxford are preparing to collaborate on the launch of a website dedicated to identifying and naming virtually all applications that contain spyware worldwide. This initiative has enthusiastic support from Sun and Microsoft.
StopBadware.org is a free website that prioritizes identifying all applications that secretly install spyware and provides a list of software that may harbor other types of malicious code, helping users make informed decisions before downloading any program from the Internet. Additionally, it offers comprehensive security recommendations for individuals to protect themselves against malware threats.
The listing on StopBadware will also include “Adware” programs that are known for generating pop-up advertisements, many of which have the potential to carry a virus or Trojan.
According to Forrester Research, at least 60% of computers today are infected with viruses or various types of malware, with many of these infections occurring when users “curiously” download some trivial free application from the Internet.
Cybersecurity companies are eager to collaborate with StopBadware.org and recommend that users consult the site before downloading or installing any applications. Although the website is still under construction, users can already visit StopBadware to access initial information.
