In Vietnam, there are many different breeds of ducks, ranging from egg-laying ducks to meat ducks and wild ducks like the migratory duck. However, there are also some duck breeds with quite unique names, such as the sea duck, which leaves many people wondering what it actually is.
When you first hear the name sea duck, you might think that it refers to a type of duck that lives in the sea (similar to how migratory ducks can fly in the sky). In reality, this is a hybrid duck breed from Vietnam, and it is quite special. In this article, we will help you answer the question of what a sea duck is and share some characteristics of this breed.
What is a Sea Duck?
This breed of duck can live in saline and brackish water environments.
The sea duck, also known as the Đại Xuyên duck or sea duck 15, is a breed created by the Đại Xuyên Duck Research Center under the Vietnam Livestock Institute. This breed is called a sea duck because it has the ability to live in the sea, forage for food in the ocean, and drink seawater.
The sea duck is not only a meat duck but also a versatile breed that can be raised for egg production, yielding up to 240 eggs per year. Due to these advantages, the sea duck is considered a breakthrough in hybridization technology at the Đại Xuyên Duck Research Center.
Where is the Sea Duck Raised?
The sea duck thrives in saline and brackish water environments, making it very suitable for farming in coastal and island areas. Currently, Đại Xuyên sea ducks are widely raised in the Spratly Islands and are very suitable for improving the economy of coastal and island regions. Many brackish water areas have also adopted sea duck farming in combination with other livestock, yielding excellent results.
