A New Type of Shoe with Six “Feet” to Protect Wearers from Landmines Developed by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
This innovative device is tailored to fit the wearer’s foot and is designed to detect and avoid triggering landmines, according to Assistant Professor Franz Konstantin Fuss, Deputy Director of the Biomedical Manufacturing Research Center, and Adin Tan Ming, a collaborator on the project.
Fuss stated, “We hope this idea can lead to the creation of a new generation of shoes that can protect the feet and lives of those living in areas with leftover landmines.”
Each “foot” of the “Mine Shoe” is equipped with sensors to detect buried landmines. When a signal is detected, the foot retracts instantly to avoid triggering the mine.
Currently, nearly 80 countries around the world still have landmines buried underground. These pose significant challenges in countries such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, the former Yugoslavia, Angola, Mozambique, and others.
Mine clearance organizations estimate that every 22 minutes, someone loses their life due to landmines somewhere in the world.
