For couples in love, holding hands while sleeping is an indescribably wonderful feeling. So, are you envious to know that there is a species that gets to enjoy this sensation every day?
Otters holding hands while sleeping.
The species referred to here is the sea otter, which can be found along the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean and is the largest member of the weasel family. They have one of the thickest fur coats in the animal kingdom, with between 250,000 to 1,000,000 hair strands per square inch of skin.
There are many interesting things to discuss about this adorable animal, but what people often mention is that they tend to hold hands while sleeping. But why do they do this?
Sea otters often form a “raft” when they eat, sleep, and rest. A raft can consist of anywhere from 2 to even hundreds of otters together. To maintain a secure raft, they typically hold hands. Additionally, if they are alone, sea otters often use kelp to wrap themselves up to prevent drifting away from their habitat.
Sea otters are a species of animal belonging to the weasel family. They primarily inhabit the Pacific coast of North America. Their range includes the shallow waters of the Bering Strait and the Kamchatka region, extending down to the southern waters of Japan. Sea otters feed on shellfish and various invertebrates such as clams, sea urchins, and abalone. They have the ability to use rocks to crack open the shells of these creatures. Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, whereas other otter species usually remain on land. Sea otters breed year-round, with peak periods occurring from May to June in northern populations and from January to March in southern populations. They give birth in the water and typically have one pup weighing between 1.4 to 2.3 kg. |
