The Qingming Festival, characterized by light drizzles primarily occurring in the southern regions of the Yangtze River, not only indicates an increase in rainfall during this period but also suggests that the rain is generally light, with droplets falling gently. This phenomenon typically arises at the transition from winter to spring.
During winter, the southern regions of the Yangtze River experience limited rainfall due to the dominance of cold air from the north. As spring arrives, warm and humid air begins to move northward once again. When this warm, moist air encounters the cold air, the amount of moisture in the sky increases. Consequently, the rainfall during the Qingming Festival is noticeably greater than that of winter.
So why do we see light drizzles and overcast skies at this time? This is due to the humidity from the south being relatively weak, which is still insufficient to produce heavy rainfall. Northern Vietnam also experiences the effects of this humid air mass.
