The antelope meets an unfortunate end after being relentlessly pursued by a ruthless cold-blooded predator.
In nature, speed is not always the decisive factor. Sometimes, a single mistake can lead an animal to its death at the hands of a hunter or put it in a disadvantageous position.
The antelope jumps into the water but still cannot escape the “queen of the savanna.” (Video: Maasai Sightings).
In a video filmed at the Kruger National Park (South Africa), an antelope, despite its superior speed, ultimately falls prey to a pack of hyenas chasing behind.
The reason is that it chose to leap into a small lake instead of continuing on solid ground. Perhaps the antelope thought this action would make the hunters give up.
However, the subsequent events unfolded in the opposite direction. With their bold and greedy nature, hyenas do not easily abandon their prey. Particularly, the cunning of the hyenas was evident when they realized that the prey had just made a fatal mistake.
Indeed, jumping into the lake caused the antelope to lose all its speed advantage. Meanwhile, the hyena simply ran along the edge of the lake for a while, then swam after its prey as it began to show signs of exhaustion.
The antelope’s poor decision led to its capture by the enemy. In contrast, the hyena’s persistence in pursuing the prey rewarded it with a hearty meal.
Known as the “queen of the savanna,” hyenas are among the most fearsome predators in the African grasslands, likely only second to lions.
Jumping into the lake was the antelope’s poor decision that led to its capture.
One of the reasons the name “queen of the savanna” was given to this animal is that the leader of the hyena pack is not a male, but a female.
With their inherent cunning combined with pack strength, hyenas are always a constant threat to other animals. When encountering them, other species tend to hesitate and retreat to preserve their lives.
In many cases, these sharp, cunning predators even actively follow lions and leopards, then seize their food for survival. If they clash with these animals, hyenas rarely meet their demise due to their reckless nature, sharp teeth, and overwhelming numbers.
Additionally, hyenas possess some unique abilities, such as knowing how to track and exploit scavengers like vultures to locate successful hunts.
However, the above clip also shows that when necessary, hyenas can effectively hunt alone without relying on pack strength or their usual “scavenging” habits.
