This research was presented on Tuesday at a conference for American universities specializing in breast cancer in Montreal, Canada.
The researchers conducted a survey involving 18,967 cases of cancer cell infections and found that 54% of women were still alive approximately five years after their diagnosis, compared to 40% of men.
Even in cases where patients were considered incurable, 25% of women had a lower risk of dying from the disease than men. Women treated for cancer using surgical methods and/or chemotherapy had a 30% higher chance of survival than men, the study indicated.
This outcome also suggests that biological differences play a significant role in diseases and may affect testing processes, as well as highlight potential opportunities for new drug developments, said researcher Juan P. Wisnivesky.
