The EU plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8% by 2012 |
Global warming is increasingly threatening the lives of many people across Europe and has even begun to harm the trade sector, prompting the European Union (EU) to take urgent action.
“People expect to see real action from the EU as climate change is affecting their daily lives,” said the head of the international climate change group at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas stated that he would bring the public’s opinions to the United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Montreal next week to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change in Europe. The conference, taking place from November 28 to December 9, is the first since the Kyoto Protocol on emissions reduction established by the United Nations.
Dimas indicated that the EU has planned to cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 8% by 2012 and hopes to discuss an international conference on global warming at the Montreal meeting.
