More than 60% of people in the UK regularly harm their teeth by using anything they can find to pick them. Among the items used are scissors, screwdrivers, earrings, needles, and even knives.

The survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation also found that 23% of respondents admitted to leaving food trapped in their teeth, which increases the risk of gum disease and bad breath.
Dr. Nigel Carter, the Executive Director of the foundation, stated: “It is clear that many people need to be educated about the importance of using dental floss.”
“Flossing is a minimal but essential part of daily oral care, aimed at removing food debris stuck between teeth that can cause gum inflammation. This should be done at least once a day before brushing.”
“However, it is important to remember to be gentle, even when using dental floss, as poking or prodding the gums can damage gum tissue.” Dr. Carter advised that the best way to remove food from between teeth is to use dental floss specifically designed for this purpose. He warned against using any other items that are not specially designed for dental care.
Other items that people commonly use include keys, paper clips, matches, earrings, nail files, pencils, knives, and forks.
