The search engine Yahoo! was also founded by a pair of young men, similar to Google. The founders of Yahoo! are David Filo and Jerry Yang, both “citizens” of the prestigious Stanford University in the United States.
From the Need for Thesis Research
Yahoo! was created by its founders out of their need to search for information on the Internet while working on their doctoral theses. In February 1994, as the list of collected web addresses grew longer, both had to spend considerable time categorizing and reorganizing them for easier access. Initially, it started with main directories, but they soon had to develop subdirectories for more detailed and accurate classification.

Some Yahoo! fans used computer tricks to convert the Eiffel Tower into… the Yahoo! logo. |
Thus, David Filo and Jerry Yang came up with the idea of systematically organizing website addresses to make information easier to find according to individual preferences. This idea became the foundation for the creation of Yahoo!.
Initially, they named their search engine “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web.” However, feeling dissatisfied, they turned to a dictionary and discovered the term “Yahoo,” which is an abbreviation for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.” Some other names they initially considered included “Akebono” and “Konishiki,” but both Yang and Filo appreciated its meaning in another context, defined as “crude, simple, and wild,” similar to the Yahoo creature in Jonathan Swift’s work. Yahoo! quickly expanded with the support of friends of the two founders. About six months after its launch, the website achieved a record traffic of 1 million hits per day, equivalent to 100,000 unique visitors.
By 1995, Yahoo! officially became a company, and the founders engaged with numerous investors in Silicon Valley. As a result, Sequoia Capital agreed to invest nearly $2 million in Yahoo!. It is worth noting here that Sequoia is regarded as having keen insight as it had previously achieved great success by investing in Apple, Atari, Oracle, and Cisco Systems.
In 1996, the Yahoo! founders shocked many when their staff of only 49 people included high-profile leaders like Tim Koogle from Motorola and Jeffrey from Novell.
Today, Yahoo! generates approximately $4 billion in revenue annually, with profits nearing $1 billion, and the company’s market value stands at about $120 billion. Daily, Yahoo! attracts around 345 million visitors. Yahoo! has offices in most major regions around the world and may soon have an official presence in Vietnam.
For Effective Searching
To effectively search for Vietnamese content, you should use Yahoo!’s Vietnamese search page at http://vn.search.yahoo.com/ instead of typing Vietnamese Unicode in the English search page.
On this search page, you will find the interface entirely in Vietnamese. It has three distinct sections: general web information search, image search, and news search. This categorization will help you filter out unwanted content in search results, thus shortening your information retrieval time.
Yahoo! also allows you to customize parameters related to your search results. To customize, go to the “Preferences” section to specify functions such as: Safe Search (restricting adult content from search results); Language options (only finding results in the language you have chosen); Layout and Display (changing the display style of the search results page).
Additionally, you can refine search results by accessing the “Advanced Search” section to set specific search parameters such as time, keyword position in information, domain, file format, and more.
