Yesterday, Yahoo quietly released a new version of the widely used online messaging application, Yahoo Messenger, version 7.5.0.647.
Notable new features in this version include call notifications for incoming and outgoing calls, along with key functions aimed at supporting VoIP conversations directly from Yahoo Messenger in the Actions menu. However, it seems that Yahoo may be making the same mistake as AOL with its AIM by integrating advertising banners into their instant messaging service.
Currently, Yahoo is simultaneously offering two versions of Yahoo Messenger to users. The Yahoo Messenger Voice! 7.5.0.x is still in the testing phase, incorporating various features to support Internet voice conversations (VoIP), while version Yahoo Messenger 7.0.2.x is primarily designed for text chatting.
Other competitors like Google Talk, promoting “connectivity” to all other messaging platforms, and the visually appealing Windows Live Messenger are also attracting users. Now, Yahoo is also eyeing another strong competitor in the lucrative VoIP market: Skype. While calling rates from Yahoo Messenger are relatively low, user feedback suggests that Skype remains the champion at this time.
