The American software company acknowledges that some updates for its music player software may cause Windows Media Player 10 to malfunction.
Many users have complained that they are unable to search, fast forward, or rewind in version 10. The Playback mode also does not function, even though the status bar still indicates that it is active. Additionally, the playback slider may abruptly return to its original position.
This issue arose after users installed one of three patches from Microsoft. The first patch addresses a “critical” vulnerability in Windows Media Player. This flaw could allow an attacker to gain full control of the system if they trick the user into opening a file containing malicious code. The other two patches include Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center 2005 and an update for DirectX Video Acceleration from Windows Media Video dating back to 2005.
Microsoft has not disclosed how many users have reported issues with Media Player. They also announced that a patch released in February of last year may also cause problems with the ActiveX control. Users can download the fix here.
