94% – a concerning statistic regarding computer safety. The highest financial damage per individual is estimated at approximately 410,000 VND, while the lowest damage is around 260,000 VND per person. This data comes from a survey conducted by the Cybersecurity Center (BKIS) involving over 2,000 computer users in Vietnam.
It should be noted that the 94% figure only represents those surveyed among 2,000 Vietnamese computer users and cannot be generalized to all the hundreds of thousands of computers currently in use in Vietnam. However, it is a significant and alarming statistic!
The survey results indicate that computers used by individuals in the commercial sector are the most infected by viruses (96%), followed by the education sector (95%), and the service industry (94%)…
Furthermore, 44% of survey participants reported that in 2005, their organizations had to halt operations for at least one day due to virus-related issues. Interestingly, 33% of respondents stated that they were not concerned when encountering problems caused by viruses.
According to Mr. Nguyễn Tử Quảng, the Director of BKIS, these figures demonstrate that people are not sufficiently vigilant against the dangers posed by viruses. Five percent indicated that they would not use a virus-infected computer until they received help from someone else.
BKIS’s survey results revealed that 34% of respondents said they needed several days to resolve issues caused by viruses. Only 44% of individuals regularly update their antivirus software weekly.
Additionally, 20% of users update their antivirus daily, while 8% do so monthly. The remaining 28% only update their antivirus software when they suspect their computer may be infected.
The situation regarding computers infected with Spyware and Adware in Vietnam over the past year has also been quite severe, with 87% of respondents stating that their computers had experienced such disturbances.
Moreover, 57% of participants reported receiving between 1 to 10 spam emails daily. Another 12% reported receiving between 10 to 20 spam emails per day, and a significant 20% stated they received at least over 20 spam emails daily.
According to responses from those managing websites in Vietnam, 34% of websites experienced attacks 1 to 2 times, 11% faced attacks 3 to 5 times, and 20% of websites were attacked more than 5 times.
Calculations estimate that the average damage incurred by each computer user is about 260,000 – 410,000 VND per year.
In 2005, a total of 232 new viruses, Adware, and Spyware were discovered in Vietnam, compared to 84 viruses the previous year.
According to BKIS forecasts, computer viruses, Spyware, and Adware will continue to emerge weekly. The concern over a new virus capable of causing significant damage by attempting to destroy data on infected computers while safely spreading to other targets is increasingly apparent.
