A leopard lunged at a wild dog, clamping down on its neck before pinning it to the ground, but the wild dog quickly fought back and managed to escape.
This intense encounter was captured by tourists visiting Wilpattu National Park in Sri Lanka.
In the video, a wild dog is leisurely walking along a dirt path, unaware of its surroundings. Seconds later, a leopard, hidden in the grass, suddenly lunges out, attempting to grab the dog’s neck. The leopard quickly manages to pin the wild dog to the ground, but the agile animal breaks free and escapes.
Witnessing its prey escape right before its eyes, the leopard can only watch in disappointment before quietly moving away.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is a large cat species found in sub-Saharan Africa, Northeast Africa, Central Asia, India, and China. They range in length from 1 to nearly 2 meters and weigh between 30 to 90 kg. Females are typically about two-thirds the size of males. Despite being smaller than other big cat species, leopards are formidable predators.
Their prey includes antelopes, deer, wild boars, rabbits, fish, birds, and various other creatures. Leopards are excellent climbers and can leap up to 3 meters high.
According to National Geographic, leopards can run at speeds of nearly 60 km/h. When they spot a potential prey, they approach in a crouched position, lowering their heads to avoid detection.
Leopards approach cautiously and quietly. When they are within 5 to 10 meters, they may begin their attack. The hunter lunges forward, bringing down the prey with a bite to the neck. Smaller animals like birds or rodents can be killed by a swipe of their claws.
