The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that in the coming days, a cold air mass from the North will gradually move down to the South.
From May 13, the northern provinces are likely to experience the effects of a Northeast monsoon, bringing showers and thunderstorms. It is forecasted that in mountainous areas, the lowest temperatures could drop below 16 degrees Celsius, while the lowland areas of Northern Vietnam (including Hanoi) are expected to have temperatures ranging from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius.
From May 13, Northern Vietnam will experience a rare cold air mass in the last 40 years, with mountainous regions dropping below 16 degrees – (Illustrative image).
Specifically, the upcoming cold air mass will occur from May 13 to 15 and may cause strong winds in the Gulf of Tonkin, reaching level 6, with gusts of level 7-8. Regarding this cold air mass, meteorological experts stated that since 1981, this could be considered one of the rare cold air events in May over the past 40 years. According to historical data from the Lang weather station (Hanoi), the average daily temperature recorded on May 4, 1981, was 16 degrees.
Starting from May 13, 2022, the temperatures in Northern Vietnam will drop significantly along with heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in the northern mountainous regions. Meteorological experts warn that residents in these areas need to proactively take precautions due to the high risk of natural disasters such as thunderstorms, hail, strong winds; landslides, and flooding in mountainous areas, as well as localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Thus, the northern provinces have about 5 days left before experiencing rain and cold temperatures. The center and meteorological experts are currently monitoring the situation closely, and an official announcement regarding this cold front will be released soon.
