South Korean Scientists Extract Compound from Traditional Kimchi to Effectively Treat Avian Influenza
A team of scientists at the National University of Seoul has announced that their research has discovered a compound in the traditional pickled dish – kimchi – that can effectively combat the avian influenza virus, which is currently a global concern.
This fermented dish produces lactic acids such as Leuconostoc citreum. The researchers tested this compound on chickens infected with the avian influenza virus, resulting in over 85% recovery among the treated chickens. Professor Kang Sa-ouk from the National University of Seoul stated, “We fed the sick chickens a diet containing this compound, and the results were remarkable, not only against avian influenza but also against many other viruses.”
Kim Jung-Hwan, a poultry farm owner, commented, “While other farms are suffering from disease, our farm remains safe!.”
Currently, Cell Tech, a South Korean poultry feed distributor, is supplying approximately 3 tons of this feed to the South Korean market and plans to increase its sales volume tenfold next month. The company has also received numerous orders for export to Taiwan and Europe.
