Last weekend, Oracle released a free version of its renowned Oracle 10g database application – also known as the “freebie” version – through the Oracle Technical Network (OTN).
The Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, commonly referred to as the XE version, primarily targets database enthusiasts and those who wish to try out Oracle’s technology, according to Andy Mendelsohn, Senior Vice President in charge of Oracle’s server data technology.
Although the Oracle XE is a streamlined version at approximately 150MB, it maintains compatibility with the full version and includes all the necessary API functions.
However, the free Oracle version can only run on single-processor computers with 1GB of RAM and can handle user data volumes up to 4GB.
The Oracle XE is currently available in versions that are well-suited for both Linux and Windows. Users can download this version here.
