The long-standing border dispute between these two countries has escalated as hackers from both sides decided to “fire” at each other’s government websites.
Peru and Chile are in disagreement over the control of a 39,900 km² area in the Pacific Ocean. Previously, the two nations have also shown no tolerance regarding the ownership of Pisco, a popular alcoholic beverage. Peru claims that this drink belongs to them, yet it has been registered, produced, and marketed by Chile. The locals have even engaged in debates over which country has the tastier seafood.
Most recently, the website of the Peruvian Ministry of Justice became a target for a Chilean hacker. One of the messages posted on the site was: “We fight for what belongs to us. The ocean and Pisco are Chilean“.
Peruvian officials stated that the attack occurred after a Peruvian hacker, known by the alias Cyber Alexis, allegedly hacked into the Chilean National Emergency Office’s website and claimed: “We can do whatever we like according to the law and on our territory“.
Both countries are now working to repair and upgrade their website systems to prevent further intrusions in the future.
