The widespread heatwave in Northern Vietnam is about to end. Soon, the northern winds will bring a drop in temperatures, and some areas may experience heavy rain. How will the temperature in Hanoi change, and when will the heavy rain arrive?
The North is currently enduring a widespread heatwave. The weather has been hot for an extended period, with Southeast winds interspersed with West winds creating a muggy atmosphere. In some places, sporadic sunshine and rain have made residents feel fatigued, prone to heat exhaustion, sore throats, coughing, and allergies.
Although the heatwave has not yet completely subsided across the North, starting today, temperatures are beginning to decrease slightly in many localities, partly due to scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.
In Hanoi, on the afternoon of July 11, the weather remained quite hot, with temperatures nearing 40oC (the actual perceived temperature outdoors) and potentially a bit higher in areas with wide roads and tall buildings.
From now until the end of the weekend, the temperature is expected to decrease by 1 – 2oC each day, and the number of hours of intense heat during the day will also reduce, with occasional thunderstorms. This weekend, the heatwave will come to an end.

Notably, from around Monday, July 15, the North is forecasted to welcome northern winds, which will significantly reduce temperatures. In Hanoi, the highest perceived temperature during the day will not exceed 35oC, which is considerably cooler than the current temperatures. The northeastern region of Northern Vietnam will experience a more substantial drop in temperature.
The shift to northern-northeastern winds, along with the potential development of a tropical convergence zone in the East Sea this weekend, will cause scattered showers and thunderstorms in the North, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rain starting the night of July 13.
In Hanoi, heavy rain is expected from Sunday afternoon through Monday, so residents should plan accordingly to avoid being caught in thunderstorms.
