A strong earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Luc Yen District (Yen Bai) on the afternoon of May 29. Residents near the epicenter felt the shaking clearly.
The Institute of Geophysics (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) reported that the earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 struck the area of Luc Yen District (Yen Bai) at 3:09 PM on May 29, with a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Muong Lai Commune (Luc Yen District), bordering Bac Quang District (Ha Giang), and is about 30 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred over a month ago (magnitude 4, in Yen Lam Commune, Ham Yen District, Tuyen Quang).
Many residents in Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, and Ha Giang felt the shaking from the earthquake.
“I was at home when I heard a loud noise, and my house and belongings shook for about 2-3 seconds. This earthquake felt less intense than the one a month ago,” shared Ms. Vy (from Luc Yen District).
“At the time of the earthquake, I was sitting on the 5th floor, so I felt the shaking quite clearly. The furniture and tables shook lightly for about 3 seconds,” added Mr. Hung (from Luc Yen District).
The Institute of Geophysics assessed that this earthquake has a disaster risk level of 0. The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center – Institute of Geophysics is continuing to monitor this earthquake.
Previously, at 4:13 PM on April 27, a magnitude 4 earthquake occurred in the area of Ham Yen District, Tuyen Quang, with an epicenter depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
The epicenter of that earthquake was located in Yen Lam Commune (Ham Yen District, Tuyen Quang), bordering Luc Yen District (Yen Bai) and Bac Quang District (Ha Giang).
According to the earthquake zoning map of Vietnam, the area where the earthquake occurred lies between the Lo River fault and the Chay River fault.
In Vietnam, earthquakes with magnitudes of 3 to 3.9 are considered weak, felt by some people, but rarely cause damage. It is possible to notice objects in the house shaking.
