The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has reported that from the evening of May 15 to the end of May 16, Northern Vietnam will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, ranging from 40-70mm in most areas, with some places receiving over 150mm; the rain will be concentrated in the provinces of Hà Giang, Yên Bái, and Hòa Bình, extending to the eastern coastal areas.
Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Sơn La, and Lào Cai will see rainfall of 20-50mm, with isolated areas exceeding 70mm. The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will also begin to experience showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon and evening of May 15, marking the end of the heat wave in these regions.
Following this period, from May 19 to May 20, Northern Vietnam will again see showers and thunderstorms, with localized heavy rainfall; from May 20 to May 21, rain will spread to the areas from Thanh Hóa to Thừa Thiên Huế; the rainfall will be concentrated in the afternoon and evening.
Experts advise the public to be cautious of the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, as well as flooding in low-lying areas. Additionally, heavy rain over a short period can lead to urban flooding. Severe thunderstorms may also bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind.
From this evening, May 15, heavy thunderstorms are expected in Hanoi and Northern Vietnam.
Meanwhile, from now until May 31, Northern and Central Vietnam may experience 1-2 heat waves, with widespread extreme heat.
During this heat wave, the northeastern region of Northern Vietnam will see maximum temperatures generally ranging from 35-38 degrees Celsius; the northwestern region will see maximum temperatures from 36-39 degrees Celsius.
The Central region will generally have maximum temperatures of 36-39 degrees Celsius. In the mountainous areas of the western Central region, maximum temperatures will reach 39-41 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 42 degrees Celsius.
The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will maintain hot weather until May 23, with maximum temperatures commonly reaching 35-38 degrees Celsius. In the latter half of May 2024, these areas will experience rain, leading to a gradual decrease in heat.
From today, the heat in Southern Vietnam is gradually receding, now only affecting the southeastern region with maximum temperatures of 35-36 degrees Celsius, and some areas exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity will be at its lowest, ranging from 50-55%. The duration of heat during the day will be from 12 PM to 4 PM.
