With the ability to filter up to 260 tons of CO2, NO2, and fine dust, this product can be considered a solution to save the Earth in the future.
You may not see air pollution, but it causes over 7 million deaths each year. Fortunately, a solution known as CityTree—a technological green wall—helps eliminate harmful particulate matter and can filter air equivalent to 275 urban trees.
CityTree has appeared in major cities such as Oslo, Paris, Brussels, and Hong Kong along their main streets. CityTree is not a real tree; it is simply a decorative machine designed to look like foliage.
CityTree – the technological green wall that helps purify the air.
Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Solutions, stated: “These technological leaves have a larger surface area than natural leaves, meaning we can eliminate more pollutants.”
The CityTree technological green walls are up to 4 meters tall, about 3 meters wide, and buried 2.19 meters deep. There are two versions: one with seating, and the other equipped with informational or advertising panels.
Due to their large air contact surface, each of these leaves can remove dust, nitrogen, and ozone from the air. Additionally, they operate entirely autonomously by using energy from solar panels and rainwater. The collected rainwater is funneled into an adjacent reservoir and then pumped into the ground.
This invention also includes a Wi-Fi sensor to measure soil moisture, temperature, and water quality.
“We have sensors installed inside that monitor air quality at the tree’s location and its operational efficiency,” Mr. Wu noted.
In one year, CityTree removes 240 tons of CO2.
Each day, a CityTree can absorb 250 grams of harmful substances, and over the course of a year, it will eliminate 240 tons of CO2. However, the installation of CityTrees is currently facing challenges from local authorities.
“We installed CityTrees in Modena, Italy, and now the city government is concerned about these technological trees for security reasons,” Mr. Wu shared.
Nonetheless, the company will continue its operations and soon introduce its invention to India, where air pollution levels have reached alarming thresholds. So far, 20 CityTrees have been installed in major cities worldwide, including Oslo, Paris, Brussels, and Hong Kong.
The total cost for each technological green wall is approximately $25,000. While this is a significant amount, it is considered worthwhile given CityTree’s ability to cleanse the air of harmful pollutants.
