Dumbo is a rare species of octopus.
On September 24, Sky News published a video showing the rare Dumbo octopus swimming at the bottom of the North Pacific Ocean.
The footage was captured by the E/V Nautilus expedition team. E/V Nautilus stated that their mission is to “explore uncharted areas of the ocean floor to provide additional knowledge in biology, geology, and archaeology.”
According to E/V Nautilus, the Dumbo octopus is a rare species that lives in the deepest waters ever explored by humans (at depths of about 7,000 meters below sea level), with an average lifespan of 3 to 5 years.
The E/V Nautilus team also noted that unlike other octopus species, the Dumbo octopus does not have an ink sac and is unable to change color. Instead, it uses its “ears” as fins to help move and maintain balance in the water.
