Researchers from the Insect Museum at Khon Kaen University and the Natural History Museum reported that the spider, named Chilobrachys natanicharum, features a violet-blue hue reminiscent of electric sparks.
They referred to the spider’s rare coloration as an “enchanting phenomenon.” The researchers wrote in their published findings: “The blue color in animals is an intriguing and relatively rare phenomenon in nature. The blue in tarantula spiders is a unique example of structural color evolution occurring at least eight times.”
The species name was selected from a nationwide auction, eventually being named after the executives of Nichada Properties, a real estate company. The images reveal the spider’s violet-blue hairs on its legs and body.
Researchers stated that the coloration on the spider’s legs is “unique” and “iridescent.” Female and juvenile male tarantulas display more purple hues, while adult males exhibit more pronounced blue shades.
This species primarily inhabits the mangrove forests of southern Thailand, often sheltering in tree cavities or evergreen forests.
The habitat and the demand for tarantula spiders have impacted the population of this species. Therefore, researchers emphasize the need for conservation and protection efforts for tarantulas.
