The official WinRAR CD version has become a “limited” item as of today.
On May 31, WinRAR, the renowned data compression software, officially discontinued the CD version after 22 years since its launch.
WinRAR CD was a disc used to install WinRAR software, including the license key and other essential information. When purchasing a WinRAR license, users had the option to receive the CD by mail.
According to WinRAR, the reason for discontinuing the WinRAR CD is that the CD manufacturing plant has ceased operations and the demand for this CD version is no longer high.
“Congratulations to all who own the WinRAR CD! You are now cooler!”, WinRAR shared in their official announcement on social media X.
WinRAR later posted an image of the “last WinRAR CD” with the caption: “One of the last WinRAR CDs has found a new home.”
WinRAR was first launched in 2002 and quickly became one of the most popular data compression software worldwide. This software is favored for its effective data compression capabilities, user-friendly interface, and support for various file formats.
The discontinuation of the WinRAR CD version marks a significant turning point in the history of this software, reflecting the software industry’s shift towards digitalization. Nowadays, users can easily download and install WinRAR directly from the company’s official website without needing a CD.
However, WinRAR still offers an offline installation version for users without internet access or those who want to install the software on multiple computers.
WinRAR is a popular file compression and decompression software developed by Eugene Roshal, a Russian software engineer. First launched in the fall of 1993, WinRAR quickly became one of the top choices for Windows users due to its efficient data compression and support for a wide variety of file formats. WinRAR offers a 40-day free trial, after which users can purchase a license. However, most of WinRAR’s features remain usable even after the 40-day period ends. This has led to the perception that purchasing WinRAR is a meme on the Internet, and those who buy this software deserve to be “celebrated.” |
