At first glance, no one could identify what the creature was, as it lacked a clear shape, appearing instead as a mass of black wriggling slowly across the ground. It even left a long trail of fluid in its wake.
According to the uploader of the clip, this is not a single creature, but rather hundreds of caterpillars gathered together, bustling as if they were “marching” towards a destination.
Destin, the owner of a series of YouTube clips titled Smarter Every Day, along with Phil Torres, a conservation biologist, encountered a similar phenomenon during an expedition in the Amazon rainforest. Destin later theorized that the caterpillars crawling over each other in a mass may be a strategy to move faster. Compared to moving individually, traveling in a group allows the caterpillars to cover a greater distance in the same amount of time.
