This vaccine targets various types of cancer, including lung, breast, prostate, colorectal, and ovarian cancers, by encoding one of the most common proteins expressed in these specific cancers.
The vaccine is viewed as a form of immunotherapy, working by stimulating the body’s immune system to attack the cancer-causing proteins present in the patients’ bodies.
Dr. Toh Han Chong emphasized that although the trials are still in the early stages, scientists have achieved very encouraging results. Further testing will be conducted to evaluate and hopefully reach a final conclusion soon.
This research project is a collaboration between the National Cancer Centre, clinical research institutes, and biotechnology companies from Singapore and the United States, specifically MicroVAX, and has been ongoing since September 2014.
Singapore was chosen as the site for these new vaccine trials due to its world-class medical centers.
