“SpaceWalk” is located on the hills of Hwanho Park in Pohang, South Korea, standing 24.6 meters tall from the ground to the highest point of the spiral. This 333-meter-long steel walkway incorporates LED lights in the handrails and steps. In the evening, when illuminated, the staircase resembles a cloud against the night sky. The builders aim to provide visitors with a feeling of “walking in space.”
To ascend this walkway, which can accommodate 250 people at once, visitors must climb a central staircase before choosing one of two paths. One side offers a gentle slope, while the other is steeper. Both routes end at a metal barrier at the beginning of the spiral. The highest point accessible to visitors is 20 meters above the ground. Once at the top, they can enjoy panoramic views of Pohang city and the nearby Yeongil Bay.
SpaceWalk also serves as an observation deck. The structure is described as a perfect spot for viewing the surrounding area, the night sky, sunrise, and sunset. “With its characteristic curves and twists, the structure is reminiscent of a roller coaster. However, this project draws inspiration from speed and acceleration,” shared Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth, the designers behind SpaceWalk.
This is not the first time the duo has simulated a roller coaster-like structure. In 2011, they garnered significant attention with the walkway named “Tiger and Turtle” in Duisburg, Germany.
