During an expedition to explore Thung Cave, part of the Hung Thoòng cave system in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Quang Binh Province, the team from Jungle Boss has recently discovered a water lake with a depth of about 18 meters, exhibiting an unusually cold temperature compared to other lakes in Thung Cave.

Mr. Le Luu Dung, Director of Jungle Boss Company, stated that this lake is quite small, measuring just over 10m², surrounded by a lot of mud. However, the lake water remains very clear.
The lake is nearly 18m deep and the water temperature is around 16 degrees Celsius. (Photo: Jungle Boss).
“The water temperature in the lake is about 16 degrees Celsius, which is much colder than other lakes in Thung Cave. The expedition team also tried to measure the depth, and the results were truly surprising, with the lake’s depth reaching nearly 18m. This is an unimaginable depth for a lake with such a small surface area,” said Mr. Dung.
According to initial assessments, this could be a lake connected to an underground cave system, leading to a very large cave at the bottom level of Thung Cave. “All assessments are still just hypotheses and require many more expeditions with appropriate equipment to explore this mysterious lake,” Mr. Dung added.

Previously, in early May 2024, a “floating” lake was also discovered in a branch of Thung Cave, part of the Hung Thoòng cave system, located about 15m higher than the underground river system.
This lake is situated in a branch of Thung Cave, approximately 15m above the main underground river branch in the cave, making it appear as if the lake is “floating” on the cave wall. The lake is about 1km from the cave entrance, with a surface area estimated at several hundred square meters, surrounded by stalagmite columns.
