On May 10, Mr. Lê Lưu Dũng, director of Junglee Boss LLC (Phong Nha, Bo Trach, Quang Binh), announced that his survey team has just found a mysterious lake in a tributary of Thung Cave, which is part of the Hung Thoòng cave system.
Remarkably, this lake is situated about 15 meters above the main underground river in the cave, making it appear as if it is “suspended” on the cave wall.
Visually, the lake is located about one kilometer from the cave entrance and has a surface area of several hundred square meters, surrounded by stalagmite columns.

However, the survey team is currently unable to measure the depth of the lake due to a lack of diving equipment. They also have not found a source of water feeding the mysterious lake.
Given the unique location of the lake, the survey team has temporarily named it Suspended Lake.
“We will return to Thung Cave soon with more equipment to uncover the mysteries surrounding this lake,” Mr. Dũng stated.
Hung Thoòng is one of the most pristine areas in Phong Nha – Ke Bang. In the local dialect, “Hung” means valley. The Hung Thoòng system, or Thoòng Valley, is unique and distinctive, featuring many caves deep within a strictly protected area of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, surrounded by millions of years old limestone mountains and primary forests. The Quang Binh Provincial People’s Committee has permitted experimental tours to explore Hung Thoòng starting from early 2023. |
