Scientists have recently discovered a new species of glasswing butterfly in various regions of Vietnam. Additionally, a new species of the Oreocharis plant has been identified in the limestone mountains of Quảng Trị and Thừa Thiên Huế provinces.
Entomologists from the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, along with Japanese and Chinese entomologists, have described a new butterfly species.
The new species is scientifically named Ypthima thao Monastyrskii & Lang, 2022, named after the wife of Dr. Alexander Monastyrskii, the lead author of the research paper.
This new species belongs to the Nymphalidae family and has been found in northern and central Vietnam, as well as in Southwest China.

Specifically, specimens were collected in Đồng Văn district, Hà Giang; Tam Đảo National Park, Vĩnh Phúc province; Bạch Mã National Park, Thừa Thiên Huế province; and Đắk Trăm commune, Đắk Tô district, Kon Tum province. Specimens were also collected in China, near the Vietnam border.
Researchers from the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, in collaboration with Bắc Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hạ Long University, Vietnam National University Hanoi, and the Guangxi Institute of Botany in China, have also discovered and described a new species of Oreocharis.
The new species has been named Oreocharis phuongii, featuring flower stalks that can reach up to 22 cm, two bracts, yellow flowers with tubular corollas, four stamens, and capsules that can grow up to 6 cm long.
The new species of Oreocharis discovered in the limestone mountains of Quảng Trị and Thừa Thiên Huế.
This new species is distinguished from other members of its family by several morphological features of the leaves (shape, leaf base, tip, and margin), the size of the calyx tube, the hairiness of the corolla tube, and the internal surface of the three lower petal lobes.
The new species was discovered in the limestone mountains of Quảng Trị and Thừa Thiên Huế provinces. The research findings were published in the journal PhytoKeys 193: 45-53.
Scientists from the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, along with their collaborators, have also discovered a new species of fern, recorded in Sơn Kim commune, Hương Sơn district, Hà Tĩnh province.
The discovery of numerous new plant and animal species contributes to affirming the biodiversity of Vietnam.
