According to the BTA news agency, the authorities in Topolovgrad, Southern Bulgaria, recently announced the discovery of unique archaeological artifacts of high value during the excavation at the tomb site of a Thracian knight in the village of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda.
The grave of the Thracian warrior from the Roman army, dating back to the early first century AD, was excavated by a team of archaeologists from the National Institute of Archaeology and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The research team made the unique findings on the second day of the excavation.
Experts believe that some of the artifacts are among the most unique ever discovered in Bulgaria, including a hunting knife with a handle adorned with gemstones, featuring images of hunting dogs carved into one of the gold motifs on the knife’s blade.
Other artifacts found include a gold necklace, a gold crown, a gold ring, an inlaid gold and semi-precious stone knife, as well as various types of weapons.
Additionally, the archaeologists also discovered the remains of a horse buried alongside the body of the Thracian knight.
Once the excavation is complete, the artifacts will be transferred to and preserved at the History Museum in Topolovgrad.
