Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) more intelligent than the smartest human could be developed by 2025 or 2026.
In a recent interview on X Space, Musk told Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), that the next version of Grok, the AI chatbot from his startup xAI, is expected to be trained by May 2024.

“If you define AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) as being smarter than the smartest human, I think this could possibly be feasible next year or within the next two years,” Musk said when asked about the timeline for developing AGI.
Musk founded xAI in 2023 to compete with OpenAI, the company he sued for abandoning its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity, rather than for profit.
According to Reuters, OpenAI later denied Musk’s allegations.
According to Musk, training the Grok 2 model requires approximately 20,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), and he added that version Grok 3 and above will require 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips.
Musk stated that while the chip shortage is a significant obstacle for AI development at this time, the supply of electricity will be crucial in the next one or two years.
Speaking about electric vehicles (EVs), Musk reiterated that Chinese automakers are the “most competitive in the world,” while also posing the “toughest challenges” for Tesla.
Previously, Musk warned that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers would defeat global competitors if they were not hindered by trade barriers.
