A Rare Collision Between a Humpback Whale and a Yacht Off the Coast of Mexico on May 14 Almost Resulted in Four Fatalities.
Humpback whale collides with yacht off the coast of Mexico.
According to local reports, the collision caused the yacht to rock violently, leading to four passengers falling into the waters of the Gulf of California off the coast of Ahome, Sinaloa, in northern Mexico.
All were rescued in time, but two individuals sustained injuries, including a woman with a broken leg and a man with broken ribs and a head injury. Footage at the end of the clip also shows the yacht being towed to shore in a severely damaged condition.
Omar Mendoza, coordinator of the Ahome Civil Protection Organization, stated that the presence of a large number of yachts in the Gulf of California, where many whales gather at this time of year, may have triggered the incident.
Ahome Mayor Gerardo Vargas also cautioned the public to be careful when whale watching. “Please do not get too close to them. We can enjoy the beauty of these giant creatures, but from a safe distance,” Vargas emphasized.
Just a few weeks ago, another yacht was also struck by a whale off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, resulting in three people being hospitalized.
