Alexandros Kontos, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food in Greece, stated that a series of measures have been implemented immediately after the discovery of avian influenza in Romania and Turkey. A strategy has also been outlined to prevent the disease from entering the country.
In light of the recent developments concerning the “migration” of avian influenza to neighboring European Union countries, Alexandros Kontos mentioned that surveillance programs are being carried out to identify the source of the outbreak, allowing for timely interventions.
The importation of live poultry, meat, and other poultry products from countries reporting avian influenza has also been prohibited.
Customs officials at airports and seaports are working closely with veterinary authorities to prevent the illegal importation of poultry and poultry products.
