While fishing offshore, a fisherman from Thanh Hóa discovered a blue whale near Nẹ Island, approximately 26 nautical miles from the Thanh Hóa coastline.
On the afternoon of September 20, the People’s Committee of Hoằng Trường Commune, Hoằng Hóa District, Thanh Hóa Province confirmed that a local fisherman had spotted and recorded a blue whale in the waters of Hoằng Hóa while fishing offshore.

According to Mr. Lê Trương Mít (born 1992; residing in Liên Minh Village, Hoằng Trường Commune, Hoằng Hóa District), while fishing in the offshore area of the district, he discovered a blue whale near Nẹ Island, about 26 nautical miles from the shore.
“The whale appeared around 12:00 PM on September 12. Initially, the blue whale was far from our floating net, but then it came closer. With my experience at sea, I confirmed it was a blue whale and recorded it with my mobile phone,” Mr. Mít recounted.
According to Mr. Mít, the whale was approximately 8 meters long, as when it approached the raft, it was nearly the same length as the raft (Mr. Mít estimated that his raft is about 10 meters long).

This is also the first time a Thanh Hóa fisherman has discovered a blue whale in these waters. Previously, in July 2022, a pair of blue whales (mother and calf) was recorded in the waters of Đề Gi (Bình Định Province) for several days.
The scientific name of the blue whale is Balaenoptera musculus. This is the largest animal known to have ever lived on Earth. This marine mammal dominates the oceans, reaching lengths of up to 30.5 meters and weighing over 200 tons. |
