Intel Plans to Unveil New Processors by Early 2006
Intel, the world’s largest chip manufacturer, is expected to announce several new processors between now and early 2006. The company will also reveal new pricing for its processors in the upcoming year.
The new processors, the Pentium IV 672 and Pentium IV 662, will support virtualization technology and are set to be introduced next month. Meanwhile, the Celeron D 355 promises higher clock speeds compared to other chips in its category. The Celeron D 355 will be announced on December 25, alongside Intel’s statements regarding the new chip line utilizing 65nm technology for PCs and laptops.
The pricing for the Pentium IV 672 and 662 will be similar to that of the Pentium IV 660 and 670, which means they will be priced at $605 and $401, respectively. The Celeron D 355 will be priced around $127. Intel is expected to cut prices for all remaining Celeron D series in January 2006 when it announces the new processors utilizing 65nm technology.
In related processor news, Intel’s competitor, AMD, has recently reduced the price of its Athlon 64 series by 20%, following announcements of price cuts on most other desktop chip lines.
The new pricing for AMD’s desktop chips is now lower than their corresponding versions from Intel. The price of the Athlon 64 3200+ has dropped to $155, which is 5% cheaper than the Intel Pentium IV 521, and 14.8% less than the Pentium IV 531 priced at $178.
