According to a reporter in Tokyo, Mr. Mayumi Hayashi, a senior executive at Food & Life Companies, stated that the company and its partners aim to promote the use of recycled cooking oil for SAF production, especially in the context of climate change posing risks to business operations.
Specifically, Food & Life Companies will collect used cooking oil from approximately 680 stores under its management, including the Sushiro conveyor belt sushi chain and the Japanese-style izakaya pubs. Subsequently, Food & Life Companies will supply this used cooking oil to a joint venture established by JGC Holdings to produce SAF at an oil refinery to be built in Osaka. This joint venture aims to produce around 750,000 liters of SAF annually, primarily supplying fuel to domestic airlines.
SAF is a type of aviation fuel that emits approximately 80% less CO2 compared to conventional fuel. The Japanese government has set a goal to increase the proportion of SAF in the total annual fuel consumption of domestic airlines to 10% by 2030.
