Approaching the enclosure and teasing a female orangutan, a 19-year-old young man learned a memorable lesson from the large animal.
On June 6, at the Kasang Kulim Zoo in Riau Province, Indonesia, Hasan Arifin, 19, jumped into the monkey enclosure to capture a “funny” moment with an orangutan. However, the large animal seemed to become agitated when the young man extended his arms towards the cage.
The clip shows Hasan quickly retreating as the orangutan suddenly reached out towards him. It attempted to pull Hasan into the cage before a friend rushed over to help.
Hasan reportedly sneaked into the enclosure while staff were on their lunch break to film a video. However, during this “prank,” the orangutan grabbed his shirt and pulled him close to the cage until Hasan’s legs were trapped in the orangutan’s grip.
A friend rescued Hasan from the orangutan while zoo staff rushed over to calm the animal down. Fortunately, Hasan was not injured in the incident.
“This guest broke into the monkey enclosure and wanted to film a video, creating content without permission. He crossed the protective barrier. This is foolish behavior. It puts himself and others at risk. I reminded the staff to ensure that no visitors have the opportunity to do this again,” the zoo manager expressed angrily.
Experts have stated that orangutans are approximately seven times stronger than humans, can lift three times their body weight, and possess long, powerful arms.
A non-profit organization in Indonesia is preparing young orangutans to adapt to life in the wild by teaching them survival skills such as recognizing dangerous snakes, climbing trees, building nests, and foraging for food.
