The animal and plant species we know may only represent a small fraction of what exists, and there could be mysterious creatures living in many places that we have yet to discover. One such entity is the Mothman.
The history of Mothman may trace back to ancient times, reflected in various myths and legends, such as the Harpy in Greek mythology, Garuda in Indian mythology, and Horus in Egyptian mythology. These figures could be considered prototypes of Mothman.

These creatures are often described as half-human, half-bird or half-human, half-beast, possessing immense power and mysterious abilities. In various cultures, they hold different symbolic meanings; some are viewed as deities or protectors, while others are seen as demons or monsters.
However, in modern society, Mothman is regarded as a largely unknown life form. The first sighting of Mothman occurred in a small town in West Virginia, USA, in 1966. Five individuals working at a cemetery witnessed a brown, humanoid figure emerge from a nearby tree and fly over their heads. They were confused and frightened, realizing that the creature soaring above them was not a bird but a human-like being with wings, red eyes, and sharp teeth. This sighting sparked interest in the Mothman legend.

A few days later, a young couple stumbled upon an abandoned factory in a nearby town. As they curiously explored the area, they were astonished to see a pair of large, glowing eyes in the darkness belonging to a creature resembling a human but significantly taller, with astonishingly large wings. When the mysterious being turned to face them, its presence sent a wave of panic through them, and the couple fled in terror.
On another occasion, a couple visiting friends encountered this flying entity. It leaped from tree to tree, with bat-like wings, large red eyes, and a headless body. Terrified, they accelerated their vehicle and sped away. They reported their sighting in detail to the local authorities but received no explanations or feedback.
In the following months, over 50 sightings of Mothman were reported around Chicago. One of the most famous incidents occurred on the night of January 7, 1970, when a man named Henry McNeil witnessed a moth-like creature on his way home. He described it having pristine white fur and glowing red eyes, standing about 6 feet tall with a wingspan of approximately 10 feet. He later recalled, “I had never seen such a terrifying creature. It was neither human nor bird; it was simply an evil existence.”
With the rise of media attention, rumors of Mothman began to spread. (Illustration: Allthatsinteresting).
These sightings attracted widespread media attention, leading some journalists and researchers to delve deeper into these mysterious beings. They named the creature “Mothman” due to its appearance.
As the investigation progressed, they were surprised to discover that sightings of Mothman were not limited to the Chicago area but were reported across the United States and even around the world.
With the media spotlight, rumors about Mothman gradually spread, bringing the image of Mothman into clearer focus. Mothman is described as a humanoid creature with wings, resembling a human foot structure. Its fur is typically gray or brown, and its most notable feature is its terrifying red eyes.
Over time, these rumors became increasingly bizarre, with some claiming that Mothmen could become invisible and could only see each other. There are also hypotheses suggesting that female Mothmen are stronger than males and that all Mothmen are initially born male.

It wasn’t until an incident on December 5, 1967, that Mothman became a topic of greater discussion. That evening, the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant was congested when suddenly a steel column on the bridge warped and broke, causing the entire bridge to collapse, sending vehicles into the Ohio River. This tragic accident resulted in the deaths of 46 people and left 2 missing, after which some claimed to have seen Mothman at the time of the bridge’s collapse.
Others asserted they witnessed a bright light in the sky before the bridge fell. These eyewitness accounts further fueled attention and discussions about Mothman, causing the town to again become the focus of media and public interest.
Simultaneously, people began to notice a startling phenomenon: since 1966, those who witnessed Mothman reportedly committed suicide or fell into mental illness, with most living no longer than six months. The total number of such individuals reached over 100, renewing interest in Mothman within the community.

In 1975, a journalist named John Keel systematically compiled all speculations about Mothman at that time and published the book The Mothman Prophecies. This book also provided a wealth of eyewitness testimonies and investigative reports that carefully intertwined the causes of the Silver Bridge collapse with Mothman, concluding that Mothman was responsible for the bridge incident.
However, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers investigated the Silver Bridge collapse, they confirmed that the failure was due to metal fatigue and bolt slippage. The incident was attributed to the bridge’s quality issues. Meanwhile, folklorist Brouvan conducted surveys and interviewed 100 witnesses. He found that the descriptions of Mothman by these individuals primarily stemmed from mythology or media portrayals. He noted that the actual details provided by these witnesses were too vague to offer specific descriptions, often citing various environmental factors as reasons for their inability to detail what they saw.

Additionally, studies of the numerous public and eyewitness reports revealed a significant number of misinterpretations or biases in perception. For instance, some construction workers reported seeing Mothman, only to later reveal it was a prank they played out of boredom by attaching a flashlight to a helium balloon. There were also instances where low-flying aircraft were mistaken for a “grayish-white human figure,” demonstrating that despite the multitude of Mothman sighting reports, none provided complete and detailed evidence, leading Mothman to become an urban legend.
No one has definitive answers regarding how many undiscovered creatures exist on Earth. Whether Mothman is an urban legend or an unknown being can only be confirmed over time and through new discoveries.
