The fascinating world of twins and the unique bond they share through their own evolving language has always intrigued scientists.
Twin brothers Matthew and Michael Youlden, who currently reside in Spain, have developed a unique language called Umeri, spoken only by them. The Youlden twins, originally from Manchester, United Kingdom, are well-known for their linguistic abilities, each fluent in 25 languages.
However, Umeri holds a special place in their hearts. They began creating this language in their childhood, and it has evolved into a complex form of communication that continues to connect them, even as they now live in different countries.

A Personal Language Born from a Close Connection
The Youlden family’s journey with Umeri began very early, inspired by their close relationship and exposure to various languages.
Dr. Nancy Segal, Director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University, notes that up to 40% of twin toddlers develop unique forms of communication, often referred to as “twin talk.”
This phenomenon, described as “cryptophasia” or “private speech,” typically fades as twins grow older and begin interacting with a broader range of people. However, for Matthew and Michael, their shared language has only grown stronger, reflecting their still-close bond.

A Language That Evolves Over Time
Unlike most “twin languages,” Umeri has expanded and adapted as the Youlden twins have grown up. Their language now includes modern terms for items like “iPad” and “Lightning cable.”
Their childhood passion for language led them to study many languages, incorporating elements from each into Umeri. Initially written in a self-created alphabet, Umeri is now expressed using the Latin alphabet for better comprehension.
The Lasting Impact of Umeri on Their Lives
Karen Thorpe, a child development expert, explains that the private language between twins often arises from deep personal connections, a phenomenon not unique to twins.
Despite living apart, with Michael in Gran Canaria (an overseas territory of Spain) and Matthew in the Basque Country, the twins remain close through Umeri. However, they do not intend to pass it on, viewing it as a special intimate bond tied to their shared experiences.
