42 Micro-Needles on a Patch Compared to a Coin |
Irish scientists have developed tiny needles that are only 150-300 microns long (1 micron = 1/1,000 mm), which cause no pain when injecting medication. They are long enough to penetrate the skin but do not reach the sensory nerve endings.
Currently, these needles are made of silicone, but in the future, there will be biodegradable needles that can dissolve in the skin. Dr. Birchall, a member of the research team, stated: “They are cheaper and easier to manufacture. In the future, they could be produced in the form of patches to enable patients to self-administer without needing a doctor.
These needles also reduce the risk of bacterial infections from blood caused by the inappropriate reuse of needles. Additionally, they are painless, making them very useful for administering vaccines to children (such as tetanus, tuberculosis, etc.) in developing countries.”
