Scientists have developed various DNA difference maps that distinguish one individual from another. This achievement will assist researchers in understanding “bad” genes that contribute to the development of common diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
This map illustrates “the changes that allow us to study disease-causing genes,” said Dr. David Altshuler, the project leader of a team comprising over 200 researchers from six countries worldwide.
The project analyzed DNA samples from 269 individuals from Nigeria, Beijing, Tokyo, and Utah. Experts have noted that “this is a triumph of scientific research collaboration and a groundbreaking achievement.”
David Goldstein and Gianpiero Cavalleri from Duke University stated that this map will help scientists understand genetic differences, potentially aiding in predicting patients’ responses to specific treatment therapies and one day could be used to guide patient care.
