The “World History” category of the History Hit Historic Photographer of the Year award recognizes stunning photographs of historical sites around the globe.
The top prize in this category was awarded to Luke Stackpoole for his photograph taken at Fenghuang Ancient Town in China. The image captures the serene, poetic atmosphere and the rich historical culture of the streets lined with ancient houses along the Tuo River. Much of the ancient architecture in Fenghuang that remains today dates back to the Qing Dynasty, built by both Han and Miao people.
Also recognized in this category is the photograph of Bass Rock Lighthouse by Bella Falk. Bass Rock is an island off the coast of Scotland. Since 1988, when the lighthouse keeper passed away, it has become a colony for Northern gannets.
The light from the stained glass rose window creates a rainbow effect on the walls inside the church. This unique moment was captured by Bella Falk at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Pollença, Mallorca, Spain. The church was built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar.
The image of the Newport Transporter Bridge shrouded in mist was captured by Cormac Downes in the morning. This century-old transporter bridge spans the River Usk in Newport, Wales, and is regarded as an attractive and impressive monument of Edwardian engineering.
One of the most unique scenes in Scotland was captured at Castle Stalker by Dominic Ellett. This medieval castle, built in the 14th century, is associated with thrilling tales of clan feuds, assassinations, betrayals, and battles.
Luke Stackpoole also won an award for his photograph of Hegra, an archaeological site located in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. This site is a unique testament to the architectural achievements and hydraulic systems of the Nabataean civilization. Hegra was also the first site in Saudi Arabia to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Continuing to make an impression at the competition, Luke Stackpoole took viewers on a journey to admire the Monastery through his photography. This magnificent structure, carved into the rock in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, is one of the most iconic monuments in Petra Archaeological Park, showcasing stunning craftsmanship.
Also recognized in the category celebrating historical monuments around the world is the image of Calfaria Baptist Chapel by Paul Harris. This is an abandoned church located in Southern Wales.
Paul Harris also made an impact with his photograph of La Petite Ceinture. This former railway line was built around Paris, France, to transport goods and passengers. Today, it is abandoned but attracts visitors with its charm as a secret garden.
Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven (Scotland) is located quite isolated on a rocky promontory by the sea, exuding a mystical beauty. With her perspective, Verginia Hristova presented an artistic image of the spectacular scenery of Dunnottar Castle.
The Historic Photographer of the Year competition is open to amateur and professional photographers over 18 years old in the United Kingdom. Entries are judged based on originality, composition, and photographic technique, along with the meaningful story behind the image and its historical impact. |
