On October 31, Canadian officials announced the discovery of waterfowl infected with avian influenza in Quebec and Manitoba; however, this is not the dangerous H5N1 strain.
“Initial test results confirmed the presence of H5 influenza virus in 28 samples from the Quebec area and 5 other samples from Manitoba, but it is unlikely that this is the H5N1 virus,” stated Jim Clark from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) during a press conference.
Meanwhile, local newspapers reported that the avian influenza virus found in Iraq is also not the H5N1 virus. According to Iraq’s Minister of Agriculture, the country is implementing preventive measures to ensure that birds do not bring avian influenza into the nation. The area where the avian influenza was detected is the Kurdistan region, located near the Turkish border, where H5N1 avian influenza was discovered earlier last month.
