Snow and ice are not uncommon in Russia, but sometimes this natural phenomenon creates unexpected scenes.
A rare natural occurrence known as Snezhura, or “ice lard”, has appeared on the Ekateringofka River in St. Petersburg, Russia.
“Ice lard” forms when snow falls on the water surface and accumulates into a solid mass.
The Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute has released the latest images of this phenomenon on social media.
According to scientists, Snezhura forms due to thick snowfall causing the water temperature to be nearly zero. Snow falls on the water but does not melt, instead coalescing into a viscous mass that resembles plastic.
Many Russians are amazed by this strange phenomenon.
Some say Snezhura resembles “overcooked buns in a pot,” “cream,” or “lava submerged in the river.”
In December 2021, a similar phenomenon appeared on the Moika River in St. Petersburg. The city was then covered by a heavy snowfall, freezing cold.
