Unlike its dark and mottled relatives, the “mutant” devil fish owned by Mr. Duong Trung Hau (residing in Dong An Vinh village, Ly Son district, Quang Ngai province) boasts a vibrant yellow color reminiscent of turmeric.
The “mutant” devil fish currently in Mr. Duong Trung Hau’s possession weighs approximately 300 grams and has a golden yellow skin like turmeric. Notably, the fins of this fish also resemble a fan, beautifully decorated as if painted by human hands.
With its unique coloration, the mutant devil fish not only captivates those who see it but also surprises local fishermen and divers on Ly Son Island.

Mr. Duong Trung Hau shared that he buys and sells ornamental sea fish. Upon hearing from some divers who caught the mutant devil fish, he rushed to see it and decided to make a purchase. “This is the first time I have seen a devil fish with such unusual coloration,” he remarked.
“Previously, I only saw devil fish in brown, sandy colors, dark and covered in algae. This yellow devil fish is something I have never witnessed in my life,” Mr. Hau expressed.
Many divers on Ly Son Island have also never seen a devil fish with such strange colors.
Not only Mr. Hau but also many seasoned fishermen on Ly Son Island, who have dived in various coastal areas of the country, have never encountered such a fish.
After purchasing the mutant devil fish from local divers, Mr. Hau posted about it on social media, receiving many inquiries to buy it for 5 million VND. However, he has no intention of selling it yet, as he wants to keep it for display and to promote his ornamental fish supply business.
Normal devil fish typically have dark, algae-covered, mottled bodies.
According to scientists, species with unusual colors are often a result of genetic mutations or variations due to sudden environmental changes. While many variations can occur, the most commonly observed is color change. Although they differ in color, their bodies remain the same, normal, like other individuals of the same species.
