Using rice water for hair care and preventing hair loss is becoming a popular trend on social media. But does it really work as claimed?
The people of Japan and China have been using rice water for hair nourishment for centuries. However, this remedy may come with some side effects such as dry hair and scalp irritation.
According to Dr. Shasa Hu, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, there is some evidence suggesting that rice bran extract, derived from the outer layer of rice grains, may be beneficial for those experiencing hair loss. However, there are not many in-depth studies proving the actual effects of rice bran on hair. “Mineral extracts from rice bran are not present in rice sold at supermarkets because they are removed during the milling process,” Dr. Shasa Hu notes.

Rice water is generally safe for topical use, but it can sometimes cause mild irritation, swelling, redness, or flaking on the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin or dermatological conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Rice water products may also contain fragrances and other irritating ingredients. Some people find that rice water makes their hair dry and damaged instead of shinier or healthier, as the starch in rice water can draw moisture away from the hair.
Experts advise that homemade rice water should not be used as it does not contain rice bran, and they encourage treatments for hair loss that have clearer scientific evidence. If you decide to try it, only purchase products from reputable sources to avoid harmful chemicals.
