The Amazon Rainforest in Brazil is considered the lungs of the Earth. In this forest, logging operations strictly adhere to environmental regulations.
The decision on which trees to cut is not made randomly! At the Swiss-backed logging company “Precious Woods“, sustainable forest management practices are being implemented.
This company operates in a designated area of the forest, marked in yellow on the map, for one year, during which they selectively harvest a limited number of trees for timber. After that, they allow the remaining trees to recover and grow for 25 years.
“Precious Woods” is the first company to receive the “green certification” from the Brazilian government. However, only 5% of the trees logged in the Amazon benefit from this environmental certification.
Paul Westbrook, the director of “Precious Woods“, stated: “The sustainable forest management method is economically beneficial. We have proven this. This method generates income for the local communities surrounding the forest while still preserving the forest. If we do not adhere to the extraction rules, the Amazon rainforest may disappear“.
Despite these efforts, satellite monitoring of the Amazon rainforest shows that the rate of illegal deforestation remains unchanged every day.
According to the Brazilian Minister of Environment, preventing indiscriminate logging requires not only strict legal penalties but also the collective effort of everyone involved. Last year, 28,000 kilometers of forest were devastated by reckless human exploitation.
